Plácido Domingo’s annual visit to the Teatro Real this season is a two-fold source of happiness: having once more the presence of the most outstanding and versatile tenor of the current age, and enjoying the premiere in Spain of a moving work full of poetic and political resonances, a work that brings to this venue for the first time Daniel Catán, a Mexican composer whose contribution is essential for the development of a national opera in Hispanic culture. The history of a fictitious friendship between Pablo Neruda and a postman, which achieved such great success in the film with a similar title based on Ardiente paciencia by the Chilean writer Antonio Skármeta, is also the tale of a political initiation to freedom.
